Summer Reading Assistant

The Wabasha Public Library is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join their team as a Summer Reading Assistant for the summer of 2026. This part-time, temporary position is ideal for someone passionate about children’s literature and committed to fostering a love of reading within the community. The Summer Reading Assistant will play an integral role in supporting summer reading programs, assisting with library duties, and creating a welcoming, engaging environment for all visitors.

This position is temporary (June to July 2026) with average of 10 – 12 hours per week, with potential for additional hours depending on weekly needs; includes early evenings and Saturday mornings.  Starting pay is $20.33 per hour.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in the design and implementation of engaging summer reading projects and activities for children and families.
• Lead and participate in Summer Reading Program activities and sessions, promoting a fun and educational experience for participants.
• Provide circulation assistance, process interlibrary loans, handle materials, and maintain shelves.
• Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other equipment for library events and programs.
• Provide excellent customer service, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience for all library visitors.
• Recommend children’s books, share knowledge of literature, and engage with patrons in a friendly and approachable manner.

Qualifications:
• Strong knowledge and enthusiasm for children’s literature.
• Creative mindset with the ability to contribute to the design and execution of reading-related activities and programs.
• Flexibility to work various hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Physical ability to set up and take down event equipment.
• Basic computer skills and a willingness to assist library patrons with technology and resources.
• Friendly, approachable demeanor with a strong commitment to high customer service standards.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to promote library events and materials on social media.
