The City of Wabasha is educating local youth on how its waste gets processed. The Utilities Department hosted a Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour with Wabasha-Kellogg Outdoor Biology Class on Wednesday, November 5th. There were eight students students along with Biological Sciences Teacher, Brianne Schumacher who toured the facility and learned about the daily operations. Plant Supervisor Pat Mueller led the tour explaining the importance of how the waste gets processed at the treatment plant and where it all comes from. Joining him was Wastewater Technician, Steven Henthorn, he did a demonstration with the robotic camera and showed students how useful this device can be in identifying issues in the sewer lines. They also learned about the opportunities in this field. Students learned how the Wastewater Treatment Plant uses micro-organisms to knock down the phos levels and break down all the sludge in the process.
Mueller was happy with the opportunity to educate the public. ” I think it’s important that all the students learn what happens at the plant and they know the process. I think we’ve been successful in doing that by partnering with Wabasha-Kellogg School.”
