Are you a natural leader with a strong background in project management and field operations? The City of Wabasha is seeking an Assistant Director of Public Works to join our team. In this position, you will act as both a project manager and lead worker, providing on-site supervision and direction to a diverse crew. You will ensure the delivery of high-quality services to our community while balancing daily operational work and administrative accountability.
Key Responsibilities

- Crew Leadership: Provide clear work direction, mentorship, and daily supervision to a diverse team of City employees, community volunteers, and external contractors.
- Project Management: Oversee operational project work from start to finish, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards.
- Financial Accountability: Maintain records of labor, material, and equipment expenses incurred during public works tasks and projects.
- Public Service: Deliver high-quality, reliable, and responsive service to the general public.
- On-Site Operations: Actively participate in field operations, stepping in as a lead worker to support the crew and resolve complex issues on-site.
What We Need
- Proven Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading or supervising crews with mixed skill sets, including municipal staff and outside contractors.
- Project & Time Management: Strong ability to prioritize tasks, meet project deadlines, and adapt to shifting field conditions.
- Administrative Skills: Competence in tracking budgets, logging hours, managing materials, and generating basic operational reports.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills to smoothly coordinate between internal teams, external vendors, and community residents.
- Commitment to Safety: Deep understanding of workplace safety regulations to keep crews secure on-site.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent GED and (5) years of progressive responsibility in the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure including at least (1) year of supervisory.
- Possession of valid State of Minnesota Class B driver’s license with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Must obtain Certified Pool Operator’s license at earliest training convenience.
- Must be able to successfully complete the new employee & leadership training through the city within 60 days.
