Committed to our future – Inspired by our past

In 1990, the Wabasha City Council established the Wabasha Heritage Preservation Commission (H.P.C.). After receiving local designation, this Commission achieved Certified Local Government (CLG) status in 1992 for the City’s preservation program. The mission of the Heritage Preservation Commission is to:

  • Safeguard the heritage of the City of Wabasha by preserving sites and structures which reflect elements of the City’s cultural, social, economic, political, engineering or architectural history
  • Protect and enhance the City of Wabasha’s attraction to residents, tourists, and visitors, and serve as a support and stimulus to business and industry
  • Enhance the economic viability of Heritage Preservation Landmarks and Districts through the protection and promotion of their unique character
  • Enhance the visual and aesthetic character, diversity and interest of the City of Wabasha
  • Foster civic pride in the beauty and notable accomplishments of the past
  • Promote the use and preservation of historic landmarks and districts for the educational and general welfare of the people of Wabasha.

The HPC does this by: recommending to the City Council the adoption of ordinances designating areas, places, buildings or structures, as Heritage Preservation Landmarks or Districts. The Commission is given the authority to review and approve or disapprove of construction and demolition activities, within the Heritage Preservation District including those to private properties which in any manner will change the exterior appearance of the site. Additional duties of the commission include: survey of areas, places, buildings, structures or similar objects in the City which may be eligible for designation as a Landmarks or Districts, projects which educated the public about the History of Wabasha, and the solicitation of grants to fund such work.
